Analysis: Masonry Layout is Now grid-lanes

Masonry Layout in CSS: A Long-Awaited Arrival

Why Masonry Layout Matters for Web Design

For web designers in North East India and beyond, the implementation of Masonry layout in CSS is an exciting development. This innovative layout approach, which allows items to be displayed in a flexible, adaptive grid, can significantly enhance the visual appeal and user experience of websites.

The Long Journey Towards Masonry Layout

The quest for a CSS-based Masonry layout began in 2017, with concerns about creating a Pinterest-style layout. While flexbox seemed like a potential solution, it fell short of achieving the desired top-to-bottom and across-the-rows flow. The discussions surrounding this elusive goal have been ongoing for five years.

Candidates for the Masonry Display Property

Over the years, various names and syntaxes have been proposed for the Masonry display property, including collapsed-grid, grid-stack, staggered-grid, and compact-grid. However, it wasn't until the CSS Working Group agreed to reuse grid templating and placement properties for masonry layout that a significant breakthrough occurred.

The Arrival of grid-lanes

In January 2025, the long-awaited announcement was made: setting grid-lanes on the display property activates a masonry layout. This keyword, chosen from a list of contenders, marks a significant step forward in web design.

What's Next for Masonry Layout in CSS

While the grid-lanes implementation is now a reality, it is still up to the browser vendors to incorporate this feature into their platforms. Major browsers like Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox have already shown interest in implementing Masonry layout, albeit with different syntaxes. As for the Item Flow feature, it is still in the works and expected to be added after the official grid-lanes implementation.

For web designers in North East India and across the country, the arrival of grid-lanes in CSS opens up new possibilities for creating visually appealing and user-friendly websites. As the major browsers begin to implement this feature, designers can look forward to experimenting with Masonry layouts and pushing the boundaries of web design.
