Boosting Privacy and Security on WhatsApp: A Guide for Users in North East India

In the digital age, securing personal data has become a pressing concern. One platform that has gained immense popularity across North East India and the world is WhatsApp, a messaging application with over 3 billion users. However, its widespread use also makes it a target for cyber-attacks.

Securing Your WhatsApp Account

To safeguard your WhatsApp account, consider enabling Two-Factor Authentication, including a Security PIN. This feature adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring that your chats remain private even if your phone number is compromised.

Setting Up a Security PIN

To set up a Security PIN, navigate to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Turn on or Set up PIN. Enter a PIN of your choice and confirm it. You can also add an email address for resetting two-step verification.

Managing Privacy Settings

WhatsApp offers a Privacy Checkup feature that allows users to control who sees their data such as profile photos, About information, and status. You can also adjust the last Seen/Online setting to 'Nobody' to add an extra layer of privacy.

Controlling Who Can Contact You

Through the Privacy Checkup, you can choose who is able to contact you on WhatsApp by blocking unwanted calls and messages. You can also specify who can add you to groups, silence unknown callers, and manage your blocked contacts.

Enhancing Message Security

Another critical aspect of WhatsApp security is the use of Disappearing Messages. This feature allows you to set a period for texts to stay visible before they are deleted, providing an additional layer of security against potential threats.

Setting Up Disappearing Messages

To enable disappearing messages as the default for new one-to-one chats, go to Settings > Privacy > Default message timer and set the time frame for messages to disappear.

Protecting Your Chats

For added privacy, consider using App Lock and Chat Lock. App Lock protects the app via FaceID or Touch ID on the iPhone, or with Android's Fingerprint Lock. Chat Lock allows you to lock specific chats so they appear in a separate folder away from the main list, protected by your face or fingerprint.

Deleting Conversations

If you need to delete conversations in a hurry, WhatsApp allows you to do so in Settings > Privacy > Chat Lock > Unlock and Clear Locked Chats.

Advanced Security Settings

WhatsApp offers advanced settings to help protect your account against scammers and prevent revealing your IP address. These settings are turned off by default, but turning them on can provide additional security.

Blocking Unknown Messages and Protecting Your IP Address

To turn on Block Unknown Messages and Protect Your IP Address, go to Privacy > Advanced.

Disabling Link Previews

By enabling Disable Link Previews, the links you send will not generate a preview, helping to prevent your IP address from being revealed.

Reflecting on Privacy and Security

As digital communication continues to evolve, so too will the methods used to secure our data. By understanding and utilizing the features offered by WhatsApp, users in North East India can take control of their privacy and security, ensuring that their conversations remain private and secure.
