Analysis: Austin Florian, Mystique Ro, Kelly Curtis, Dan Barefoot make the US Olympic skeleton team

US Olympic Skeleton Team Announcement

The US Olympic Skeleton Team Takes Shape

The road to the Milan Cortina Olympics has become clearer for the United States Skeleton team, as four athletes have been officially selected to represent the nation in the head-first sliding event next month.

A Familiar and New Faces

Among the selected athletes, Austin Florian and Mystique Ro, winners of the mixed skeleton world championship last season, have earned their spots. Florian and Dan Barefoot will represent the men's team, while Ro and Kelly Curtis will compete in the women's division.

  • Austin Florian: 2022 Olympic team returnee and a consistent performer on the World Cup circuit this season.
  • Mystique Ro: A seasoned athlete who has proven her mettle by winning the mixed skeleton world championship.
  • Dan Barefoot: A newcomer who made a strong comeback with three wins in a six-day span on the North American Cup circuit.
  • Kelly Curtis: The lone returning member of the 2022 Olympic team.

The Race for the Final Spot

Katie Uhlaender, a five-time Olympian, put forth a valiant effort to secure a spot on the team. She participated in various races throughout the season, but just missed the cut-off. In an attempt to make the Olympic squad, Uhlaender requested full points from a race she won on Jan. 11; however, her request was denied due to no rules being broken by Canadian coaches' decision to pull some sliders out of that race.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The success of these athletes serves as an inspiration for aspiring skeleton athletes across the nation, including those in North East India. The achievements of these athletes further solidify the United States' position as a formidable force in winter sports, not just within the country, but on the global stage as well.

Looking Ahead to the Cortina d'Ampezzo Competition

The skeleton competition at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, is set to run from Feb. 12-15. Fans and followers can eagerly anticipate the performances of these talented athletes as they strive for glory on the international stage.
