Analysis: Italian coach Pamela Conti set to take charge of India U17 Women's team ahead of AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup

New Era for Indian Women's Football: Italian Coach Pamela Conti to Lead U17 Team

A New Chapter in Indian Women's Football

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has made a strategic move to bolster India's women's football scene by appointing Italian coach Pamela Conti as the head coach of the U17 women's team. This decision comes ahead of the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in China in April 2026.

Conti's Impressive Track Record

Conti, who has an impressive background in football, having played at top levels in Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga, has also earned 90 caps for the Italian senior national team. After retiring, she transitioned into coaching, starting with Atletico Madrid's women's youth teams and then moving on to manage the Venezuela women's national team.

  • In Venezuela, she looked after the seniors, U-20, and U-17 teams, and was in charge of the entire structure.
  • Her tenure delivered tangible results, most notably guiding Venezuela's U-20 team to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in 2024.
  • She has also participated in the FIFA Coach Mentorship Program.

The Asian Challenge Awaits

With Conti at the helm, the India U17 women's team now looks ahead to the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup. This edition will feature 12 teams for the first time, with the top four teams securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

For India, this marks only their 2nd appearance at the tournament since the inaugural edition in 2005. The U17 Indian women's team is currently placed in pot 3 with the Philippines and Vietnam, and the draw on 12th February 2026 in Kuala Lumpur will decide the opponents that the Indian women's team will face in the tournament.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

A good performance at the Asian level can spur women's football to greater heights in India, potentially inspiring more young girls to take up the sport. North East India, with its rich football culture, stands to benefit significantly from such developments.

Furthermore, qualifying for the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup would not only be a historic achievement for India but also serve as a stepping stone for the future of Indian women's football, providing a platform for young players to showcase their talent on a global stage.

Looking Forward

As the countdown to the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup begins, the Indian U17 women's team, under the guidance of Pamela Conti, is poised to make a mark in the world of women's football. The upcoming tournament promises to be a challenging yet exciting journey for the team, and the entire nation will be rooting for their success.
