Spanish Authorities Disrupt Black Axe Cybercrime Network

In a significant development, Spanish authorities have recently arrested 34 individuals allegedly linked to a cybercrime network associated with the notorious Black Axe group. During searches in several Spanish cities, the police seized approximately 66,400 in cash, electronic devices, vehicles, and froze 119,350 in bank accounts. The operation dismantled a cybercrime ring that had reportedly caused damages exceeding 6 million over the past 15 years.

The Spanish cybercrime ring specialized in a technique known as Man-in-the-Middle (MITM), where criminals intercept, modify, or redirect information and payments without the victims' knowledge. The most common form detected was Business Email Compromise (BEC), in which corporate email accounts were compromised or impersonated to divert large payments.

The Black Axe Connection

The Spanish authorities believe the cybercrime ring was led by individuals of Nigerian origin, who were members of the Black Axe gang. This Nigerian cybercrime syndicate, founded in 1977, is one of the most far-reaching and dangerous in the world, with an estimated 30,000 members and an extensive network of money mules and facilitators.
