In a case that underscores the growing threat of cybercrime, a 26-year-old Illinois man named Kyle Svara has been charged with orchestrating a phishing operation that targeted Snapchat users. Between May 2020 and February 2021, Svara allegedly used social engineering tactics to obtain personal information from nearly 600 women, including emails, phone numbers, and Snapchat usernames. This information was then used to gain unauthorized access to their Snapchat accounts.

Unauthorized Access and Selling of Private Photos

Once Svara had access to the victims' accounts, he reportedly harvested their credentials and accessed at least 59 accounts without permission. The stolen private photos were then sold online. Svara is facing several charges, including aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, computer fraud, and false statements. Other charges also carry maximum five-year sentences, and the false statements charge carries a maximum of eight years.
