Analysis: Debian Embraces Chinese LoongArch Processors with Official Loong64 Support

Debian 14 to Include Loong64: Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

Debian 14 to Include Loong64: Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

A New Era for LoongArch

In a significant move for the open-source community, Debian has officially promoted Loong64 to a supported architecture, paving the way for its inclusion in the upcoming Debian 14 release, codenamed "Forky." This decision marks the maturity of the LoongArch ecosystem, an instruction set developed by the Chinese processor manufacturer, Loongson.

The Long Road to Mainstream

The journey to Debian's mainline support for Loong64 has been over two years in the making. In August 2023, John Paul Adrian Glaubitz announced the initial addition of LoongArch to Debian Ports. Since then, the team has made steady progress, manually bootstrapping packages and setting up build daemons using emulation software.

Accelerated Progress

The team's efforts have paid off, as the architecture has now been moved from the experimental Debian Ports to mainline support. The developers have already imported 112 packages from Debian Ports to kickstart the official archive, leading to a working chroot and the first build daemon running.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

For users in Northeast India, the inclusion of Loong64 in Debian 14 could mean increased access to a diverse range of open-source software. As the architecture receives the same build, release, and security processes as Debian's other primary architectures, users can expect the usual coverage, eventual installer support, and long-term maintenance throughout Debian 14's lifecycle.

The Future of Debian and LoongArch

As the bootstrap process continues and more packages become available, Loong64 will receive the same treatment as Debian's other architectures. This means the same testing process, the same quality checks, and eventually, the same level of support throughout Debian 14's lifecycle.
