Analysis: Two Ubuntu Flavours Wont Be LTS Releases Next Year

Ubuntu Flavors: LTS Status and Implications for North East India

Ubuntu Flavors: LTS Status and Implications for North East India

In the world of Linux distributions, Ubuntu stands out as a popular choice, with numerous flavors catering to diverse user preferences. Recently, the Ubuntu Technical Board decided on the long-term support (LTS) status for the upcoming 26.04 release, and the decision has implications for users in North East India and beyond.

Flavors Granted LTS Status

Seven Ubuntu flavors have been designated as LTS releases for the 26.04 version: Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin. These flavors will receive five years of support, as opposed to the standard three years for other Ubuntu flavors.

Flavors Not Granted LTS Status

Two flavors, Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity, did not apply for LTS status for the 26.04 release. Ubuntu MATE has produced an LTS release every two years since its official recognition in 2015, but a lack of contributors has likely led to its decision to opt-out. Similarly, Ubuntu Unity has faced challenges, with the incumbent project lead reportedly focusing on higher education, and no LTS version was released for the 25.10 cycle.

Kubuntu's LTS Status

Kubuntu, another popular Ubuntu flavor, is not explicitly mentioned in the announcement regarding LTS status, but it is expected to be an LTS release. Given Kubuntu's long-standing presence as one of the most popular Linux desktop environments, it would be unusual for it to pass on the opportunity to release an LTS version.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The decision on LTS status affects the level of support and stability provided for each flavor. For users in North East India and other regions, this can influence their choice of distribution and the longevity of their Linux experience. While flavors without LTS status can still release non-LTS versions, they will not receive the same level of guaranteed support as those with LTS status.

Looking Forward

The future of Ubuntu flavors depends on community involvement and the willingness of developers to contribute. For instance, Ubuntu Unity's future hinges on more people stepping up to help maintain the Unity 7 codebase. As Linux continues to gain popularity in North East India and across India, the involvement of local developers and users will be crucial in shaping the future of these distributions.
