Linux Mint 22.3 Zena: A Fresh Update for North East Users

Linux Mint 22.3 Zena: A Fresh Update for North East Users

Linux Mint 22.3, the latest update in the Linux Mint 22 series, has recently hit beta, offering significant improvements and new features for users across India, including the North East region. This update builds on the many changes introduced in Linux Mint 22.2, bringing enhancements to the Cinnamon desktop, Nemo file manager, on-screen keyboard, and more.

A Modernized Mint Menu

One of the most noticeable changes in Linux Mint 22.3 is the revamped Mint Menu, which now features a full-height sidebar with user account picture, symbolic app category icons, app description text, and a row of session action buttons. The new menu is resizable and offers a variety of configuration options, allowing users to tailor their menu setup to their preferences.

Symbolic Icons for Consistency

Linux Mint 22.3 now uses the XApp Symbolic Icons (XSI) set, a distro-agnostic pack of symbolic icons that GTK application developers can rely on. This change ensures consistency across applications and helps avoid broken or missing icons within UI elements or apps.

Enhancements to Nemo File Manager

Power users will appreciate the new features in Nemo 6.6, the file manager included with Linux Mint. Highlights include the ability to search filenames using regular expressions (regex), a split pane toggle for easier navigation, and a template manager for managing document templates.

Regex Search for Precision

With the new regex search feature, users can search for files with specific naming patterns, making it easier to find and organize files. For example, you can find all PDFs with "The" in the file name by simply typing "The" into the search box.

Split Pane and Template Manager

The addition of a split pane toggle and a template manager in Nemo 6.6 makes it easier to work with multiple files and manage document templates, further enhancing the file manager's utility for power users.

Other Notable Changes

  • On-Screen Keyboard: The on-screen keyboard has been rewritten to provide a native Cinnamon implementation, offering improved visuals and input method switching from the same applet.
  • Keyboard Layout and Language Handling: Cinnamon 6.6 offers improved keyboard settings and handling, displaying traditional XKB layouts and IBus input methods together and allowing easy switching.
  • Night Light Applet: A new Night Light applet is available to add your desktop panel in Cinnamon 6.6, featuring a basic toggle to turn the blue-light filtering feature on or off and an always-on option for continuous use.
  • Workflow and Desktop Tweaks: Other improvements in Cinnamon 6.6 include app badging to show unread notification counts, the ability to show icons for open apps on workspaces, and various applet buffs, such as calendar applet refreshes and notifications applet recency configuration.

These changes and improvements in Linux Mint 22.3 make it an attractive choice for power users and casual users alike in the North East region and across India.

Looking Ahead

The Linux Mint 22.3 beta is available for download, and users with the necessary system requirements can try it out. As this is a beta release, expect bugs, regressions, and occasional quirks. Users are encouraged to report any issues they encounter on the Linux Mint GitHub to help the development team resolve issues before the stable launch, expected at the end of December or early January.
