Android 17: Separating Notifications and Quick Settings

Why This Matters for North East India

Android, the world's most widely used mobile operating system, is set to undergo a significant change with the upcoming Android 17. This update could potentially bring improved user experience, which is essential for the growing number of Android users in North East India and across the country.

Revamping Notifications and Quick Settings

Rumors of a split between Android Notifications and Quick Settings have been circulating for over a year. A recent leak, shared by Mystic Leaks on Telegram, offers a glimpse into what this separation might look like in Android 17. The design, a maturation of previous concepts, presents two options: Separate and Combined (classic).

  • Separate: Swipe down from the top right to open Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top left to open notifications.
  • Combined (classic): Swipe down from the top of your screen to access the traditional panel that combines notifications and Quick Settings.

The Separate Option

When the Separate option is enabled, swiping from the left shows notifications. The design includes a large clock at the top, with the day/date and status bar icons placed in pills at the corners. Swiping down from the right side of the screen shows Quick Settings, which is placed in a (top) sheet container.

Changes in Quick Settings

A new addition to Quick Settings is the volume slider underneath brightness. The three-dot button next to it presumably opens the full set of sliders. Otherwise, the QS tiles are unchanged from their last redesign.

Large Screens and Foldable Devices

On large screens, the Separate option will be the only available choice. The Combined (classic) view is limited to the outer screen of your foldable device.

Return of Dedicated Quick Settings Tiles

Android 17 is said to bring back a dedicated Mobile Data Quick Settings tile, which would use a cellular bar icon. The separate Wi-Fi toggle uses the icon you'd expect.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The separation of Notifications and Quick Settings could potentially improve the user experience for Android users in North East India, making it easier to manage notifications and quick settings separately. This change aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to improve the Android user experience, which is crucial for the growing number of Android users across the country.
