Analysis: I tried the future of batteries at CES 2026, and I'm ready to ditch my power banks

Revolutionizing Battery Technology: The Rise of Solid-State Batteries

Revolutionizing Battery Technology: The Rise of Solid-State Batteries

CES 2026 showcased a significant leap in battery technology with the emergence of solid-state batteries, and one company, Better Mobility Xperience (BMX), is leading the charge.

Better Mobility Xperience (BMX): Pioneers in Solid-State Battery Technology

Founded in 2025, BMX is a spin-off from Hyper, a company that was acquired by Targus in 2021. The founders of Hyper left to create BMX, aiming to capitalize on the potential of solid-state battery technology, a significant innovation since lithium-ion batteries in the 1990s.

The Advantages of Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries offer two main advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries: safety and efficiency. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which contain liquid components, solid-state batteries contain no liquid elements. This makes them safer, as they are less prone to explosions, even when drilled, cut, bent, or heated.

Moreover, solid-state batteries can take up less space than a lithium-ion battery of similar capacity. BMX's SolidSafe Air power bank, for instance, stores 5,000mAh in a device that's just 6.7 mm thick.

Solid-State Batteries Beyond Power Banks

While BMX is at the forefront of solid-state battery-equipped power banks, other companies are also making strides in this technology. Verge Motorcycles, known for its range of electric superbikes, has partnered with Donut Lab to produce the world's first electric vehicle with a solid-state battery.

The TS Pro bike, equipped with a solid-state battery, can travel up to 372 miles on a single charge, a significant increase over the standard TS Pro's 200-mile range. What's more, the bike can charge to 80% in just ten minutes.

The Future of Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries are advancing faster than expected, with Donut Labs' battery being the most impressive example. However, BMX's efforts are more relevant for everyday use, as they are working on batteries that can fit in smartphones.

A solid-state battery that can fit in a smartphone has massive implications. It could lead to smaller, more efficient, safer, and cooler devices, freeing up space for more powerful chipsets, more memory, and better camera hardware.

In the North East region of India, the potential of solid-state batteries could revolutionize the tech industry, particularly in the growing smartphone market. With companies like BMX leading the way, we can expect to see a dramatic increase in charging speeds and battery life in the near future.

A Battery Revolution on the Horizon

The battery revolution is coming, and it's exciting to see companies like BMX and Verge Motorcycles pushing the boundaries of what's possible with solid-state batteries. As this technology continues to evolve, we can look forward to a future where our devices are safer, more efficient, and more powerful.
