Analysis: Gemini app and AI Mode adding product checkout, Google Search getting Business Agent

Google's Universal Commerce Protocol: A Game-Changer for Northeast India's E-commerce Landscape

Google's Universal Commerce Protocol: A Game-Changer for Northeast India's E-commerce Landscape

Google has taken a significant step forward in the realm of e-commerce with the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This open standard, co-developed with industry leaders, aims to simplify and streamline the online shopping experience, potentially transforming the e-commerce landscape in Northeast India and beyond.

Agentic Shopping: The Future of Online Purchases

Google's new approach to e-commerce, agentic shopping, allows users to make purchases effortlessly through the Gemini app and AI Mode. By establishing a common language for agents and systems (UCP), Google has made it possible for various agents to interact seamlessly, eliminating the need for unique connections for every individual agent.

New Checkout Feature

In the Gemini app and AI Mode, the UCP will power a new checkout feature. If a user's search results in an eligible Google product listing from a US retailer, tapping Buy initiates the purchase process. This includes creating an account with the store and being directed to Checkout. The final Review your order page will be pre-filled with payment methods (Google Pay) and shipping info (Google Wallet).

AI Mode: Enhancing the Shopping Experience

AI Mode, a testing ground for ads and new features, is also introducing Direct Offers. This feature allows advertisers to present exclusive offers for shoppers ready to buy. These offers will appear as Sponsored deals in the product listing.

Business Agent: Virtual Sales Assistants

In addition, Google is launching Business Agent on Google Search. Appearing as a Chat button when searching for a partnering retailer, this virtual sales associate can answer product questions in a brand's voice. Retailers like Lowe's, Michaels, Poshmark, Reebok, and others will be among the first to use this feature.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The UCP and its associated features have the potential to revolutionize e-commerce in Northeast India, making shopping more convenient and efficient for consumers. As the region continues to grow in digital connectivity, solutions like the UCP could play a crucial role in fostering a thriving e-commerce ecosystem.

Moreover, the UCP's open standard nature could encourage collaboration among various players in the e-commerce industry, leading to a more integrated and interoperable ecosystem. This could benefit consumers by providing a wider range of products and services, as well as a more seamless shopping experience.

Looking Forward

As Google continues to refine and expand the UCP, we can expect to see more features like discovering related products, applying loyalty rewards, and powering custom shopping experiences on Google. The potential for these advancements to shape the future of e-commerce in Northeast India and beyond is immense.
