Analysis: Garmin's new AI dieting tools will tempt some athletes to try Connect Plus

Garmin Introduces AI-Powered Nutrition Tracking for Connect Plus Users

Garmin's AI-Powered Nutrition Tracking: A Step Towards Holistic Health Monitoring

Empowering Users to Achieve Their Health Goals

In an effort to help users maintain their New Year's resolutions, Garmin has introduced a new nutrition tracking feature for Connect Plus subscribers. This innovative tool allows users to set caloric goals, receive tailored nutrient recommendations, and log their meals using AI-powered image recognition.

This feature aims to make it easier for individuals to monitor their diets, understand their nutritional needs, and make informed decisions about their eating habits. The relevance of this development extends beyond personal health, as it also promotes a more proactive approach to preventive healthcare, a topic of increasing importance in the North East region and across India.

Simplifying Food Logging

Users can log meals or individual food items from a global food database, which includes packaged, restaurant, and regional food options. Meals can be logged by searching by name or using a phone camera to scan barcodes. For meals that aren't easily quantifiable, users can even utilize AI-powered image recognition.

This feature is similar to that offered by Zepp Health's Amazfit, though it requires a Connect Plus subscription. The AI's accuracy will be tested in the coming weeks.

Personalized Nutritional Insights

Once logged, food's calories, protein, fat, and carbs will be compared against daily targets, which are created using personalized data such as height, weight, gender, and active calories from workouts. Users can also customize their targets based on specific goals, such as losing weight or increasing protein intake.

Like most nutritional apps, Garmin allows users to create food favorites for quick and easy logging. Some Garmin watches also support the option to add favorites directly on the wrist, while older models will rely on mobile logging.

Long-Term Insights and AI Analysis

After long-term meal logging, Garmin will create reports to help users see their changing dietary habits over time. The Active Intelligence AI will also analyze how nutrition is impacting health and training, potentially connecting poor sleep to late-night snacking.

Connect Plus Subscription Required

Garmin Connect Plus, which launched in 2025, offers a range of exclusive features, including AI workout summaries, local Garmin Trails, live mobile activities, coaching videos, extra challenges, badges, and advanced data graphs. While some features have been paywalled, nutrition logging is commonly found on paid apps such as Fitbit Premium or MyFitnessPal.

Anyone can try Garmin Connect Plus for 30 days to test nutrition logging, after which a subscription of $6.99/month or $69.99/year is required.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

This development underscores Garmin's commitment to holistic health monitoring, focusing not just on fitness but also on nutrition and lifestyle factors. As more people in North East India and across India adopt wearable technology for health and fitness, features like these could become increasingly important for maintaining overall well-being.
